Mural Pricing

The cost of commissioning each mural is something that needs to be figured out independently. Each project is unique and has its own demands. I will however give you an idea of how I arrive at a price and some general estimated costs. Here are some factors that need to be considered.

Preliminary Drawing: In order to start any mural project a preliminary drawing and samples of the finished product must be made for client approval. This work involves an initial fee.

Media used: Type of media used in creating can affect the difficulty level of the project and the time taken to complete. For example the cost of an animal portrait in gouache watercolor would be less demanding and time consuming for the artist than if it were to be done in oil paints.

Style: A mural painted in a realistic style is typically higher in cost than a mural painted in an impressionistic style. Realistic work is more detailed and thus more time consuming

Subject Matter: A mural can range greatly in cost here. The more detail specific the higher the cost for example, a soft and subdued landscape with minimal architecture and a sparse layout will be at the lower cost end. A mural that is requested with specific guidelines, period detailing, likenesses, elaborate and ornate details etc, are going to be at the higher cost end.
Shape: A mural that is in an odd shape or one that may have many separate parts will cost slightly more than a typical rectangular shaped mural. This is due to extra time and attention taken to measure layout and cut the work.

Materials: The cost of materials used for the project will be conservatively added to the overall cost of the project. Materials include canvas, paint and tools and sundries used for its completion.

Shipping: The cost of shipping and materials used in shipping are reflected in the overall price.

In general the cost of commissioning a mural is anywhere between $25.00 and $50.00 a square foot. Over elaborately detailed murals could cost over this price.
