Fine art commissions may vary due to certain factors. Listed below are some of the factors that effect project costs.
Preliminary Drawing: Although there are a few situations when this is not necessary, a preliminary drawing/water color sketch is often needed for client approval. This is paid for in advance of job acceptance.
Media used: Type of media used in creating can affect the difficulty level of the project and the time taken to complete. For example the cost of an animal portrait in gouache watercolor would be less demanding and time consuming for the artist than if it were to be done in oil paints.
Style/Subject: The more technically detailed and typically more realistic the work is the higher the cost. An impressionistic painting of a field lit in the sunlight with a distant tree line would be considered basic. A painting of large flowering gardens overlooking a lake late in the afternoon would be considered intermediate and a painting of a
gathering of people entertaining themselves at an elaborate ball in a Victorian mansion by candlelight would be considered higher end. Although any of these themes could be done in any combination of medias and or styles, still maintaining the essence of the creative idea.
Materials: The cost of materials used will be included in the project total. Materials include canvases, media boards, paint, etc.
Shipping: The cost of shipping the finished product to the client is included in the project total.
For the most part the cost of an original fine art painting is reflected in the labor involved. Prices per square foot start out at $200.00 and can go up to and over $800.00 There are many factors and it is difficult to quote a general price but this example covers many involved in creating a custom hand painted fine artwork.
